Mieuejima (みえうえじま, 三重上嶋) is named after Mie prefecture, and the last name of its tea breeder.
This cultivar has a good resistance towards pests and diseases.
History of Mieuejima
In Mr. Uejima’s tea field of native (zairai) tea plants, there was a bush that grew much quicker than the rest.
He decided to propagate that tea plant in the year 2000.
It was registered under the seed and seedling law in 2003.
Characteristics of Mieuejima
It’s an early budding cultivar, it can be harvested 3 days earlier than Yabukita, and it has a slightly higher yield.
This cultivar is strong against cold weather, anthracnose, and the gray blight.
Mieuejima also takes less damage from the tea green leafhopper, and the kanzawa spider mite than Yabukita.
As a sencha, this cultivar has a desirable leaf appearance, and medium aroma and liquor color.
It has a good taste, although there’s some astringency.
Finally, it can also give good results as a kabusecha.
